Important medieval outpost for its hillside location, Santa Maria a Monte has long been disputed between Florence, Lucca and Pisa. The old town has a unique urban structure: the houses and buildings all look on the road that follows a spiral path. Walking through the streets to be found traces of the defensive medieval arches, tower houses the clock tower, the palace of the Podesta, the Collegiate Church, which preserves valuable works of art.
In Santa Maria a Monte was born Vincenzo Galilei, composer and father of Galileo. There is still Casa Carducci, where the poet spent his youth.

Valdarno

The Valdarno shows a landscape in which the typical Tuscan hills on the outskirts of San Miniato, covered with olive groves and dotted with medieval towns and villages, in contrast with the valley floor is characterized by a productive and lively commercial for the presence of some of the major districts industrial and small business in Tuscany.

The area, rich in tradition and history, preserves traces of long matches between Pisa and Florence for the possession of these lands and the old route of the Via Francigena, an ancient pilgrimage route which is still partly preserved.

The area has a varied landscape is accented with green hills with forested areas rich in wildlife that alternate with hills with intensive agriculture and farms and dotted with old farmhouses and the monumental structures in the shape of a basilica called "tobacconist", found mainly San Miniato and witnesses in the territory of the intensive cultivation of tobacco and carried on until the end of the '60s.
